Trust performance ratings to be published on Thursday

13-Oct-08

Ben Bradshaw
A detailed picture of whether English NHS trusts are improving should emerge this week when the Healthcare Commission's third annual review is released.

The third ‘health check’ by the watchdog will reveal whether organisations have improved their quality of services and made better use of their resources over a three-year period.

In June health minister Ben Bradshaw announced that persistently failing NHS trusts could be taken over by private companies.

This year’s report will also scrutinise trusts’ performance against new national targets, measuring health outcomes such as smoking, sexual health, health inequalities and reduction in death rates for cancer, stroke and heart disease.

Each trust receives ratings of either ‘excellent’, ‘good’, ‘fair’ or ‘weak’ on the quality of their services and how well they manage their finances.
