Abortions proposed for women in Northern Ireland

23-Jul-08

Women in Northern Ireland could be given access to safe legal abortion care, for the first time, after an amendment was put forward to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill.

Currently, women in Northern Ireland are denied the NHS treatment and funding for an abortion permitted to other UK women.

The amendment will be debated in the House of Commons after the summer recess. MPs will be given a free vote on this issue.

Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington Diane Abbot, who tabled the clause, said: ‘This fundamental inequity must be remedied. Forty years after the 1967 Abortion Act women in Northern Ireland are still facing conditions more reminiscent of the 19th century.

‘All women in the UK must be given fair and rapid access to safe’ legal abortion when they need it.’

This is a simple matter of equality. As UK citizens women in Northern Ireland should have access to exactly the same medical treatment, counselling and procedures as women elsewhere in the country. Debates about what the right level of access to abortion should be are a separate discussion.
