Nurse home visits more 'cost effective'

06-Oct-08

Nurses are better suited for home visits than GPs, medical accountants have warned.

Bob Senior, a director at Tenon Financial Services, told last week's Primary Care Live conference in London that GPs have traditionally viewed home visits as 'a nice break' from their desk in the middle of the day.

But practices are now questioning if that's the best use of doctors' time, he said. 'We're increasingly seeing experienced nurses doing visits instead.'

'Trust me,' he added, 'if we were talking about private providers, you would not see them sending their doctors out on visits in the middle of the day.'
