Structured programmes provided by nurses can reduce stroke risk factors, new research suggests.
The PARTNERS study, conducted in Canada, examined the effect of a structured strategy to modify vascular risk factors, facilitated by trained nurses. Patients with at least one risk factor for stroke were either given usual advice relating to risk factor reduction or received support in a nurse-led risk-factor modification programme or in a programme led by trained volunteers.
Patients motivated by nurses or volunteers to reduce their vascular risk factors performed significantly better than those who did not receive such support, and those who received support from nurses did better on some measures than those supported by trained volunteers.
For instance, after six months of follow up, the weight of patients given usual advice rose by an average of 4.5kg, that of those given volunteer support rose by 1.1kg, but those who received support from trained nurses lost an average of 2kg.
